How can I improve my long distance stride technique?

I’ve been running some long distance at as much of a competitive rate as I can. I usually keep it around 1 – 3 miles, but sometimes I’ll try to hit 5 or 6 miles. But when I run anywhere under 2 miles I can always hold a strong stride at the balls of my feet, but do I need to run this way when I go for my 5 mile runs?? The longer I go the harder it is and I almost want to run flat-footed the whole time. Is this at all right?

Running long distance does not mean you should run on the balls of your feet, you should land more flat footed.
If you land mostly flat footed, and roll off the front of your foot you are using what I consider to be the correct foot plant for distance running.
Your stride will be shorter when running distance than it is for sprints, and the foot plant is not going to be the same either.
As long as you don’t land too far in front of your center of gravity you are doing okay.
