So I have TMOBILE and I know minutes and texts are gonna be a hefty price, so Im looking for other options:
calling cards?
international cells?
There’s few practical ways to avoid paying large fees for international calling. Texts aren’t outrageous if you’re using France’s Orange network, but the calls will still be over $1/minute. Unlike stateside, there aren’t free weekend minutes or after 7pm free minutes, as the rates are the same 24/7.
If you’re taking a computer/laptop with you, which you most likely are, you should download Skype. This is a free video call service which allows you to communicate with friends/family anywhere on the globe as long as they have a computer. This will take care of those long calls that you want to have with friends/family in the U.S., whereas you can just use your cell phone for short calls or emergencies. It’s simple, free, and it works well. What makes Skype even better is that you can use it to call landlines/cellphones and send text messages to anywhere in the world, for free. To do this you need to buy Skype credit. Surprisingly, it’s incredible cheap. Calling someone’s cellphone in California will be around 2 cents per minute. And you don’t have to have a camera for Skype to work. If you don’t have a camera on your laptop/computer, it will work just like a regular phone. People can also call you and the rates will be the same. Needless to say $10 will go a very long way with Skype, whereas $10 may last you 9 minutes on your cell phone. Skype has definitely helped me internationally, and like I said, it’s very easy to use. And as long as you have a reasonable internet speed it will work well.
